Fishing is Special | 100 | 34 | 57 |
Unlike their relative, the Atlantic Salmon, a Pacific Salmon returns only once to breed and die (the Steelhead is an exception to this behavoir and some of the species return to spawn more than once). " Also, this committee concluded that there was "no biological basis" for distinguishing rainbow trout from Pacific salmon at the generic level hence all trout and salmon "of Pacific lineages" are now considered to belong to the single genus, Oncorhynchus, originally used only to refer to Pacific salmon. Unique among the Pacific Salmon, the Sockeye require a lake environment for part of their life cycle, living there for 1 to 2 years before migrating to the sea, where they live for 1 to 3 years. (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) The Steelhead (the sea-run form of Rainbow Trout) is the prize delight of all West Coast river fisherman and the offical state fish of Washington. Most Steelhead spawn between December and February (winter run) but some streams host runs that spawn between August and September (summer run). EXPLORING ARKANSAS' WHITE RIVER | 100 | 6 | 11 |
From its origins in the mountains to its entry into the Mississippi River as a typical river of the alluvial plain, the White is of greater importance now than back in the past when it was called Niska by the Indians and La Riviere Blanc by the French. While the White River isn't as famous a river as some you may be familiar with, face it, fame certainly isn't everything (Except to the trout fisherman of the world). The third, the West Fork, has its beginnings at Winslow, Arkansas which claims to be situated on the highest elevation of any incorporated town in Arkansas some 1,744 feet above sea level. Shortly after the latter lake, it comes back into Arkansas into the northeast corner of Boone County (Arkansas), all the time heading south eastward. Bull Shoals Lake is the next lake formed behind its dam before the river flows on to the southeast, to depart the Ozarks near Batesville, Arkansas. Even today, tow boats entering the navigable Arkansas River from the Mississippi must first pass through a short stretch of the White River. |

Fighting the Fishing Curve | 100 | 5 | 7 |
A couple of weekends ago my parents came up for a visit from Hot Springs, which, as you probably know, is also a lake and river related vacation and retirement destination, but my parents were bored with their lake and river related vacation and retirement destination and wanted to visit someone else's. Besides just wanting to get away, my parents were anxious to go trout fishing on the White River because my brother moved here from there last year and has been telling them ever since about how many fish he's been catching. We used to tease my brother about being the state's greatest wildlife conservationist because, despite the fact that about all he ever did was hunt and fish, he never seemed to come home with anything but funny stories. On that day the fishing curve was higher and I caught one fish, while everyone else caught about a million each because the conditions were good for fishing and because everyone except me was allowed to fish out of the side of the boat where the fish were. why is there water in the river on some days and no water in the river on other days, particularly on the days when my parents have driven four hours for one day of fishing and were sort of expecting there to be some water in the river? Anyway, in spite of a lack of cooperation from the Springfield area, the weather was great that day and we managed to go in with enough fish to eat, which we fried on big gas cookers at the resort and ate with coleslaw and my contribution to the meal, hushpuppies. |

Traveler's Guide to Valdez Alaska | 100 | 5 | 81 |
This page is here to help you plan your trip by providing you with information about the services and accomodations that you may need to make your trip memorable. Valdez is located on the north shore of Port Valdez, a deepwater fjord in Prince William Sound. The Port of Valdez was named in 1790 by Senor Fidalgo for the celebrated Spanish naval officer Antonio Valdez y Basan. Valdez soon became the supply center of its own gold mining region, and incorporated as a City in 1901. During the 1970's, construction of the Trans-Alaska oil pipeline terminal and other cargo transportation facilities brought rapid growth to Valdez. Valdez now has local access to the internet! |
Fly Fishing Wisconsin | 100 | 4 | 28 |
While Wisconsin isn't known as a fly fishing mecca, there is some great fishing in Wisconsin. There are 2,500 trout streams in Wisconsin and a good number of spring ponds and flowages are home to trout. Most of my fishing is for trout, mainly on the spring creeks of South Western Wisconsin but I have fished through out much of the state. West Central Wisconsin streams are similar to those of the South West part of the state but there are some nice Brook Trout streams. There are scores of small, tree-lined Brook Trout streams but Northern Wisconsin also has largest and wildest rivers in the state. CATCH AND RELEASE PROGRAM ON THE WHITE RIVER | 100 | 5 | 10 |
This catch & release program should serve as a "model" for all rivers and streams. and help others that wish to set up a catch and release program for their area. The White & North Fork River Outfitters Association (24 fishing docks and resorts along the White & North Fork River), started a Trophy Trout Release Program in December of 1983. When a person catches a brown trout over 20" in length or a cutthroat or rainbow 16" in length, we consider this fish a trophy and a pin and certificate are given. Our local biologist has stated that most 20" fish will weigh close to 4 lbs. and a healthy 16" rainbow or cutthroat will weight close to 3 lbs. We also have the person fill out a release form about the fish, its size, approximate weight and date of catch. If you would like more information on the Trophy Catch and Release Program, please contact Ron Branaman at Gaston's White River Resort, #1 River Road, Lakeview, Arkansas 72642. |

FLY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WHITE RIVER | 100 | 7 | 12 |
The following information on fly patterns, etc. Northern Arkansas waters deserve their reputation for large, healthy trout. Mild winters coupled with clean, cold water create a year-round growing season for trout in northern Arkansas streams. According to the Game & Fish Commission, trout caught and released back into Arkansas waters can grow from 1/2 to 3/4 inch every month. The two most famous rivers in our region, the White River and the Norfork River, are tailwaters issuing from large hydroelectric dams. The tailwater effect provides stable cold water temperatures and excellent trout habitat, but poses a danger to fishermen. |

Fooling a modest to big fish in inches of water, playing them on light tackle, and being able to fish "dry flies" in the dead of winter are just a few of the joys of fishing to midging trout. Using the later method, the fish will often take it when I raise my rod tip after allowing the fly to hold in the current a few moments. Look for fish, and fish to them. |
Hank Wilson's Flyfishing Tips | 100 | 6 | 11 |
Hank Wilson offers some basic guidelines for fly fishing the Bull Shoals Tailwater, plus some season advice. Concerning the basics, Wilson recommends a 6-weight, 8- or 9- foot fly rod, if you are limited to one. Wilson says many anglers mistakenly pound the dark, shady side of the river during low water conditions, when actually the trout will be feeding in shallow water on the gravel bars. " As the hatch gets busier, Wilson will go to a caddis dry fly with tan or light graywings. Wilson carries only one dry fly to match the mayfly hatch and it's his favorite dry fly pattern on the White River - a size 16 yellow Comparadun. (To read more about Hank Wilson's favorite patterns and the favorite fly fishing and spinning methods of other great anglers along the White River, call 1-800-418-7688 to order Ozark Trout Tales, a 200-page softcover book that features maps, photos and fishing tips for 168 miles of White River, North Fork River and Little Red River trout water. |

my name is Dave Bowen and I own a home furnishings business in Virginia. Computers are a hobby but my passion is fishing and going on fishing adventures. I really enjoy all types of light tackle fishing from smallmouth on ultralite gear while canoeing the James River to flyfishing for lemon sharks on saltwater flats. The photo above was taken on a bonefishing trip in the Bahamas. Argentina, Costa Rica, the Canadian Northwest Territory, Belize, Venezuela, Mexico, and the Amazon are all destinations I hope to travel to and fish someday. my typical day is fishing from sunup till about 5PM when the Tanqueray and Tonic comes out(along with the days fishing stories). |

Utah is a desert state, the second driest in the country. The Tushar mountains rise from the desert floor to more than 12,000 feet above sea level. Their rocky, tundra covered, tops provide a home for majestic mountain goats and the ever active pika. Snow covered for most of the year, they give life to innumerable springs and seeps. These combine to form several streams that cascade down all sides of the mountains. Contents copyright © 1996 4Fishing, Ltd. all rights reserved |

Cane Rod Building FAQ version 5 Bruce Conner | 100 | 2 | 32 |
This FAQ is to answer the usual questions asked by those wanting to build bamboo rods from scratch. Books Planing forms Planes Plane blades Sharpening stone Scraper Depth gage Dial caliper Hand protection (glove or fingercots) URAC-185 glue, Nyatex epoxy, or another glue of high strength and waterproofness. This modification makes a "tunnel" down the center inch or so of the plane sole and the blade sticks out into this tunnel and cuts the bamboo. The plane itself is attached to the handle/wheel gizmo by a pivot which is located just behind where the blade goes through the sole of the plane. Plane blade: You will need to get the best blade possible to do the final planing on your bamboo strips. This is a high carbon steel blade and is thicker than the standard blade which comes with your plane. |

(short for Anthony:-) Fly fishing and the full time job. Pictures, stories, observations, trip reports, and dream seeds all about fly fishing. Hopefully, & faithfully looking foward to a life of excitement, fun, positive impact, & freedom. There's a really good story here - I'll elaborate on the details sometime in the near future, but the short version: I can't tell you how many times Dad had told me that story about the time in Greenland when he caught two salmon. I'd taken him trout fishing many a time in recent years, not that he was my excuse to go fishing (honest honey:-), but hey a son has to take advantage of the opportunity to re-bond and build memories with his Dad. Bulges & Flashes | 89 | 6 | 11 |
He also shared with me a most interesting fish story that happened just up the river several years back. "I was trying to keep an eye on the fish and put my rod together, got the reel on, leader on, and a #8 Woolly Bugger-olive" with Flashabou in the tail," Hank recalled. To find the target fish you need to look for some "hint" of the fish because, often, the whole trout is not visible. A bulge will call attention to the fish, then polarized glasses might help spot the fish itself a few moments later. When the fly is right above where I think the fish will be, I'll lift the rod tip a couple inches just to make the fly barely rise up a little bit toward the surface. "Some people fish them up-stream but I try to fish them down and across, the idea being to fish on almost a slack line so the fly drifts into the trout's feeding area ahead of everything else. |

Bamboo Fly Rods in Australia | 84 | 7 | 39 |
Almost any price is worth the accuracy you'll get with a well made steel form once you decide making cane rods will be a long term hoby, but if you're not sure or can't justify the outlay all's not lost as you can make your own steel form by following the instructions in Handcrafting Bamboo Fly Rods by Wayne Cattanach or you could do what I did and make it from wood using the same dimensions Wayne gives but with a few variations in the construction method. To make this form all the tools you need are a drill press, 6mm, 8mm and 10mm drill bits which should idealy be doweling bits for accuracy as well as a spade bit a bit bigger than the diameter of the bolt heads. The only hardware required for the actual form is fourteen x 75mm barrel bolts and a strip of steel 24mm x 2mm x 1800mm all of which are available from any sizeable hardware store. The nut (for a 6mm bolt) is a 10mm rod section about 12mm long with a threaded hole running through it's diameter. Get the strip of steel and drill holes just big enough to allow the Allen key access to the bolt head as well as screw holes on either side of the access hole and screw the strip on top of the bolt heads with the access holes properly located in line with the bolts. Boats depart the marina at 6 a.m. and return 8 hours later at 2 p.m. Plan on arriving at the BAJA ANGLFRS tackle shop early to go over your tackle and fly needs and to meet your captain. You could be onto a feeding school of yellowfin tuna, dorado (mahi-mahi), jack cravelle, Sierra mackerel, black skipjack, bonito, ladyfish or others. Time your cast to land the fly to the side and slightly in front of the anxious billfish and pop-strip. If everything is right -- if the fish is in a feeding mood, if the cast is accurate and the hook well set, if your knots hold, if you don't get bill-wrapped and broken off, and your arms don't cramp -- you will have experienced the second greatest thrill an angler can enjoy. Each wide beam boat features spedal clear casting areas, casting stabilizers, live chum tanks, T-top for shade, enclosed head and state-of-the-art electronics including forward scan radar that permits the skipper to spot schools of fish out in front of and to the sides of the boat as well as far below the surface. 9 to 11 weight fly rods for dorado, skipjack, roosterfish, Sierra mackerel, yellowtail, jack cravelle and ladyfish |
